Daniel Lioneye is out on their first North American tour along with Turisas, Nachtmystium and Cradle of Filth.
The band is the brainchild of HIM guitarist Linde Lindstrom and also features HIM bassist Mige Paananen and keyboardist Emerson Burton.
Daniel Lioneye began as a tongue-in-cheek side project of HIM with Lindstrom, Paananen and Ville Valo joining up with The Skrepper's Hiili Hiilesmaa to record The King of Rock N' Roll.
Last year, Lindstrom decided to record a new album that moved in a new heavier direction.
Vol. II became a black metal album with Lindstrom, Burton and Enochian Crescent's Bolton on drums.
In order to tour, Lindstrom added Under Blackened Skies vocalist Manu and drummer Seppo Tarvainen.
The Cradle of Filth tour, the Creatures From the Black Abyss, began at the start of February and runs through March 13.
The tour made a stop in Detroit on Friday at Harpos where Lindstrom sat down to talk about touring, the album and the future of HIM.
Q: It's really cold in here tonight.
A: Yeah and I'm from Finland. [lauging as he gets up to dig through his bag for a scarf]
Q: How has the tour been going so far? You've been out for a couple of weeks, right?
A: Actually, it's been about a month. It's been great. Everyone is getting along. It's different. It's a great tour and great audiences. A weird mix you know? It's all good and the meet and greets have been lovely. It's nice to meet the fans.
Q: Do you find that most of the people at the meet and greets are HIM fans?
A: Yeah, yeah. It's great you know that they're willing to come out and take this you know journey with us. Everyone has been great.
Q: This music is so different from HIM's. Do you find that most people are willing to accept it?
A: Hmm. Well it seems like they are. Yeah, I mean it's different but most people have been great. I'm sure there are some looking at it and going no or what is this!
Q: You've had some sound issues on this tour. Has that made it difficult?
A: Yeah and we have no sound check tonight so it will be interesting. You know it is difficult because we did 3 or 4 dates in Finland before the tour began but that was our only warmup. It's been interesting trying to get things going. The other night in Pittsburgh the power went out and the show was cancelled. The four bands did not get to play so that was hard. We still did our meet and greet but we were like all right we're ready to go on you know? At the shows where the sound is not working out we have been just going out and doing it the old fashioned way. Just go and do it and see how it turns out. Sometimes not so well. We learn as we go.
Q: So you are enjoying trying something new?
A: Yeah, yeah for sure! It's lovely to do this other thing that is so different.
Q: So you definitely plan to continue with it and record some more?
A: Yeah actually after this tour we are going to go to the studio and record more. We might re-do some songs because now we have the lineup we want and I want to record with them.
Q: How did you find Manu and Seppo?
A: Well Seppo was playing in the studio next to us when we were recording. We would hear him all day all the time. Manu just came when we were looking for someone. I needed someone to help with the vocals.
Q: So you plan to continue to tour with Daniel Lioneye but where does that leave HIM? Will you be touring this year at all?
A: Honestly, I don't know. I never know really. They say be here and there I am. [laughing] There is nothing going on right now. I'm not sure when we will tour but I know it will not be until we go into the studio again. We will record another album and then tour I think. But we will be doing that. We are not broken up or anything.
Q: So do you prefer playing this to playing the HIM stuff?
A: Right now, yeah. It always changes. I like it all, you know? I'm loving this right now and definitely want to continue with it.
Q: With the meet and greets have you had any funny fan encounters?
A: Honestly not one that I can say that one, you know? We have a lot of funny fans for sure and it is great to talk to them. We have great fans that follow us and it's nice to have that contact. Sometimes we get the crazy ones but that happens!
