Friday night, she played Memphis Blues front to back and managed to win over most of the packed crowd who were expecting to hear more of her hits. However, there were still some who were disappointed and kept yelling for other songs.
Lauper
set them straight by telling them that she had done that for years and
that if they wanted to listen to the hits to go play one of her numerous
greatest hits albums because "Sony couldn't release enough of them!"
Lauper opened
the show with the fiery "Just Your Fool" and quickly made her way down
into the crowd getting them involved as she moved into "Shattered
Dreams".
Lauper's
voice is a versatile one and she did an amazing job with her blues
material and as she said, the blues is basically responsible for all of
the music that we see today. Her performance of "Early In The Morning" and "Crossroads" were also standouts.
The show was an energetic one and Lauper introduced each song before she sang it sharing stories about them and reasons why she chose to cover it.
In the end, Lauper
still managed to give the crowd some of her hits, coming back out to
perform her classics "Change of Heart", "Girls Just Wanna Have Fun" and
"Time After Time" as well as one of her most overlooked songs, the
amazing "Who Let In The Rain".
As soon as "Girls Just Wanna Have Fun" began to play, the crowd was on
it's feet and moving to the front of the stage where they stayed the
rest of the show.
Lauper closed the show with another song off of Memphis Blues, the upbeat "Mother Earth" and came back out for a encore of her anthem "True Colors".
In spite of the rocky moments, Lauper managed to put on a great show and prove that she could make an evening of blues fun.
